How to spot a
fake Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton's tells are in the date code, the canvas alignment and the heat stamp — and the rules changed in 2021, which fakers and panicked buyers both get wrong.

The tells

Genuine vs fake Louis Vuitton, point by point

Work through every row. No single line is proof on its own — counterfeiters fix the famous tells first — but the more boxes that fail, the more confident you can be.

What to checkGenuineFake
Monogram canvasPattern is symmetrical and the LV/flower motifs line up logically across panels; on symmetric bags the pattern mirrors. Canvas is slightly textured and stiff.Motifs cut awkwardly at seams, off-center, or the canvas is flat, plasticky and overly shiny.
StitchingEven, regular, slightly slanted, in a mustard-yellow tonal thread; consistent stitch count on tabs (e.g. 5 stitches across the handle tabs of many models).Uneven spacing, wrong color thread, loose ends, or a different stitch count from the known model spec.
Heat stamp'LOUIS VUITTON ®, made in France/USA/Spain' is crisp and evenly spaced. The O's are perfectly round, the L's foot is short, and the two T's are close together.Thin, faded, or uneven lettering; O's that look oval; spacing that drifts across the line.
HardwareHeavy, warm-toned brass; zippers and lock pulls are engraved 'LOUIS VUITTON', not printed. The lock and keys are solid.Light, pale, or silvery hardware; printed (not engraved) logos; a hollow lock.
Edges & glazingPainted edges ('glazing') are smooth, even and usually a warm red/tan; vachetta leather is untreated and pale, darkening to honey patina with age.Sloppy, cracked or wrong-colored edge paint; vachetta that's pre-dyed dark to fake a patina.

Serial / date code

The Louis Vuitton date code

Date code (not a serial number)

Format: LV bags made before 2021 carry a DATE code, not a serial: two letters + four digits stamped on a leather tab or directly inside. The letters are the factory (e.g. SD/FL = USA, AR/RI/SR = France, CA/LO/MB = Spain). From 2007 on, digits 1 & 3 are the week, digits 2 & 4 are the year — so 'SD2168' = week 28 of 2016, made in the USA.

Where to find it: On an interior leather tab, inside a pocket, or stamped into a seam — location varies by model.

How to verify (honest): Critical 2021 change: Louis Vuitton REMOVED date codes and switched to an embedded RFID microchip. So a brand-new authentic bag has NO date code — its absence on a recent bag is normal, not proof of a fake. There is also no public LV date-code lookup; the code only encodes factory and date, never authenticity. Treat any 'LV authentication serial checker' as fake.

FAQ

Louis Vuitton authentication FAQ

My Louis Vuitton has no date code — is it fake?
Not necessarily. LV stopped using date codes in 2021 and switched to a hidden RFID chip. A recent authentic bag legitimately has no date code. For older bags, the absence of a date code where one is expected is a concern.
Can a Louis Vuitton date code prove the bag is real?
No. The date code only encodes the factory and the production week/year. A faker can copy a valid-looking code, and a valid code on a poorly-made bag still means fake. Use it as one data point alongside stitching, the heat stamp and hardware.
Where is the date code on a Louis Vuitton bag?
It varies by model — on an interior leather tab, inside a pocket, or stamped into a seam. The format is two letters followed by four digits.
