Read the code
Format: Genuine Gucci bags have a rectangular leather tab sewn inside, usually under an interior pocket. The FRONT reads 'GUCCI' with '®' and 'made in Italy' below it; the BACK is heat-stamped with two rows of numbers — the top row is the style/model number, the bottom row is the supplier/production code. The numbers are debossed cleanly, never ink-printed.
Where to find it: Interior leather tab, typically stitched into or beneath an inside pocket.
Don't stop at the code
A correct-looking code on a poorly-made item still means fake — and fakers copy valid codes. Cross-check the code against the physical tells below.
| What to check | Genuine | Fake |
|---|---|---|
| Double-G logo | The two G's interlock with one upside-down; they are symmetrical, evenly weighted, and the gap between them is consistent. | G's that are uneven, too thick/thin, touching incorrectly, or set at the wrong spacing. |
| Serial tab stamping | Two rows of cleanly debossed numbers on the back, 'GUCCI ® made in Italy' on the front, heat-pressed into the leather. | Ink-printed numbers, a single row, a glued-on tab, or 'made in Italy' on a metal plate where the model uses leather. |
| Controllato card | Included plain card reading 'controllato' (Italian for 'checked') — the QC pass card. | Missing, or a generic 'authenticity card' with a barcode Gucci doesn't use. |
| Stitching & GG canvas | Tight, even stitching; on GG Supreme canvas the pattern aligns at seams and the beige/ebony tone is consistent. | Loose or uneven stitches; canvas pattern cut off-center or in the wrong tone. |
| Hardware & zippers | Solid, weighty hardware engraved 'GUCCI'; YKK-style or Gucci-branded zips run smoothly. | Light hardware, printed logos, or sticky/cheap zippers. |
