Where the Chanel serial sticker + authenticity card lives, how to read it, and — honestly — whether you can verify it online at all.

Read the code
Format: Pre-2021 Chanel bags have a holographic serial sticker inside (often under the flap or in a pocket) showing a serial number, paired with an authenticity card whose number MATCHES the sticker. The hologram shifts/scratches and repeats 'CHANEL'. The serial's leading digit(s) roughly date the bag by production series.
Where to find it: Interior serial sticker (under flap or in a side pocket) + a separate authenticity card in the box.
Don't stop at the code
A correct-looking code on a poorly-made item still means fake — and fakers copy valid codes. Cross-check the code against the physical tells below.
| What to check | Genuine | Fake |
|---|---|---|
| Interlocking CC's | On the front lock the right C overlaps on TOP at the top of the logo and the left C overlaps on top at the bottom — a specific over-under weave. Evenly weighted, symmetrical. | Both C's overlapping the same way, uneven thickness, or a lock that's printed rather than dimensional. |
| Quilting alignment | Diamond quilting lines up across seams, the flap and the back; the chain enters at points where the quilt matches. | Quilting that doesn't align at seams or across the flap — fakers cut canvas without matching the pattern. |
| Serial sticker & card | Hologram sticker number EXACTLY matches the authenticity card; hologram repeats 'CHANEL' and shifts with light. | Sticker and card numbers differ, a flat non-holographic sticker, or wrong digit count for the era. |
| Hardware & chain | Heavy, evenly plated chain interwoven with leather; engravings crisp; the bag has real weight. | Light, hollow chain, thin plating that flakes, shallow engraving. |
| Stitching count | Classic Flaps have a high, consistent stitch count per quilt diamond (often ~10–11 on a medium), even and tight. | Lower or inconsistent stitch counts, loose thread, uneven tension. |
