Counterfeit AirPods Pro are convincing in photos and on the table — but the serial check, the pairing animation and the engraving expose them in seconds.
RealCheck › Electronics › Real vs fake AirPods Pro
The comparison
| What to check | Genuine | Fake |
|---|---|---|
| Serial check | Serial validates at checkcoverage.apple.com as AirPods Pro with a sensible warranty status. | Serial is rejected, returns a different product, or is 'already registered' — classic counterfeit signs. |
| Pairing animation | Open the case next to an iPhone and the genuine AirPods setup card pops up with the correct model name and battery rings. | No pop-up, a generic 'AirPods' card, wrong model name, or it only connects via manual Bluetooth like a generic earbud. |
| Engraving & seams | Crisp laser engraving inside the case; tight, even seams; the hinge is firm with no wobble. | Faint or rough engraving, uneven seams, a loose/creaky hinge. |
| Settings features | iOS shows AirPods Pro features: Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive, ear-tip fit test, firmware version. | Missing ANC/Transparency toggles, no fit test, no firmware field — generic Bluetooth profile only. |
| Build & weight | Correct weight and the matte/gloss finish Apple uses; mesh grilles are uniform; 'Designed by Apple in California, Assembled in…' text is crisp. | Too light or oddly heavy, uneven finish, sloppy grille, garbled 'Designed by Apple' text. |
Tally the rows. A genuine item passes nearly all of them; a fake usually fails several even when it nails the obvious ones.
The code
Format: The serial is laser-etched inside the charging case — open the lid and look under the flap/on the case interior — and is also shown in iOS Settings → Bluetooth → (i) once paired. It's a 10–12 character alphanumeric Apple serial.
Where to find it: Inside the charging case lid; and in iOS Settings after pairing.
